After some already turbulent bumps in her pregnancy, Amy and her Husband Mike found themselves at a Maternal Fetal Medicine appointment waiting abnormally long for the images to be reviewed. It was the end of the day and they had begun to think that they'd been forgotten, even making jokes about being locked in the quiet office all night.
A young doctor finally came in. The words spoken, quickly became a blur and then a began mad rush to the hospital a few blocks away for what was supposed to be steroid shots to help develop the baby's lungs. Moments later, pulling into the parking structure Amy thought, "We don't have a car seat! How are we going to bring this baby home?"
They made it into Labor and Delivery - Amy in triage, her husband Mike waiting in the hallway outside of L&D. Time went on for hours, each of them texting the other through hospital walls. Finally, a male doctor entered Amy's curtained off triage area. He looked her over and said, "Do you know the mortality rate of this?" and then simply walked away. That's when it hit her. Things were much worse than she'd realized.
After a lengthy discussion with her OB + MFM team, Amy and Mike learned that their baby was not compatible with life and due to the possibility of his condition mirroring in Amy, the doctors feared for her safety. They encouraged a c-section that night. Instead, Amy and Mike went home to be with their living children and sleep on the news (if you can call it that).

Joshua James was born sleeping a few days later on January 5, 2023 at 28 weeks and 6 days. He weighted only 1.5 pounds.

Amy immediately began scouring Facebook groups trying to find support. She was lead to an organization that will forever be dear to her heart. Amy attended one of their Virtual Moms Groups three days after loosing Joshua and those women continued to help shape her journey through grief. Although something was always missing with her Loss Mom friends being 1,800 miles away. They considered homes in Iowa but after moving from the Bay Area seven years prior, they had already began putting down roots right where they were.
After expressing her frustration about the lack of in person support in the area, Amy was encouraged to start something herself.
Amy see's the value in giving women a space to share their stories with other women who get it. No one else can support you through this journey better than someone who has been there! In May of 2026 Loss Moms of Sacramento held it's first in person Moms Group, supporting two women.
Loss Moms of Sacramento's main focus right now is providing in person Moms Groups for women experiencing Pregnancy + Infant Loss.  This includes babies lost within the first year of life and those who were lost to Termination for Medical Reasons + IVF.
